Will TFT-LCD be replaced by AMOLED?(2)

Through connotative integration, achieve symbiosis and win-win

The development of the semiconductor display industry relies on two key driving forces: technological progress and market applications.

With the expansion and subdivision of market applications, customers have higher requirements for the performance of display devices: more realistic and beautiful images, more power-saving, thinner, more convenient, more fashionable, and better cost performance. As the current mainstream of the display market, “high-performance display devices” using low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) and oxide materials (Oxide) – TFT-LCD devices and AMOLED devices have emerged as the times require. The emergence of these new display technologies has driven the progress of materials, technology and equipment technology; the progress of materials, technology and equipment technology has accelerated their industrialization and market application.

According to the report of Displaysearch, an authoritative professional organization, the total annual market of global display products in 2011 was 111 billion US dollars, and it is expected to be 160 billion US dollars in 2018, with an average annual compound growth rate of 5.7%. Among them, low-temperature polysilicon TFT-LCD devices have an annual compound growth rate of 13%; oxide TFT-LCD devices have an annual compound growth rate of 36%; low-temperature polysilicon AMOLED devices have an annual compound growth rate of 31%; oxide AMOLED devices, The compound annual growth rate is 135%.

The above data objectively reflect the general trend of various technologies and products in the display field. Therefore, the development of my country’s display industry cannot ignore the development of the TFT-LCD industry, which has been widely accepted by the market and still has great market prospects, just because AMOLED technology has begun to be industrialized. It should coordinate the development of the industry within the broad category of semiconductor display.

The wise choice for Chinese display panel companies that have experienced rapid growth through hardships in the future should be to seize the two key points of technological innovation to promote value creation and resource integration to achieve value appreciation, and work together to create a long-term stable profit model and sustainable development mechanism.

Regarding the former, I proposed the “Law of Survival” of the display industry a few years ago: only when the performance of display products doubles every three years can enterprises survive. In order to develop better, our independent innovation goal should strive to be higher than this law.

To achieve value-added in resource integration, value-added should be realized through connotative integration. In particular, maximize the investment value by maximizing the relevance and resource sharing of TFT-LCD, AMOLED, flexible display and other technologies. To link them organically, they cannot be isolated and separated, each doing its own thing.

I have four suggestions: first, the government and the industry jointly formulate a development strategy for China’s semiconductor display industry, and further promote the localization and application innovation of materials and equipment; second, use “semiconductor display” as a national industry standard term to promote industry standardization; third, The first is to promote international cooperation in the field of semiconductor display, respect intellectual property rights, and work together for a win-win situation; the fourth is to use resources efficiently, control the pace of investment, and avoid disorderly competition.
